Aid and Development

Compassion is a child sponsorship organisation who is committed to the spiritual, economic, social and physical development of children living in extreme poverty in 26 countries, enabling them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.

Children are clearly the greatest victims of poverty. Of the 2.2 billion children in our world today nearly half of them live in desperate conditions. But it is these children who hold the potential to break the cycle of deprivation for future generations.

Compassion has over 50 years experience of working with some of the poorest communities in the world. During that time more than one million children have been assisted by Compassion.

We as Hillsong Church have a long-standing relationship with Compassion. We have been partnering with them in two geographical areas in Western Uganda – Kasese and Nebbi. We support them in 3 ways:

Child Sponsorship Programme

Compassion believes connecting one child with one sponsor is the most strategic way to end childhood poverty. Through monthly donations, prayer and letter writing, sponsors invest in the lives of children living in extreme poverty. Children attend church-based child development centres where they receive life-changing opportunities that would otherwise be out of their reach. Every sponsor child has the opportunity to develop their God-given potential and be released from the poverty that has trapped their families for generations.

Water Project

Children and caregivers in the projects we are involved in spend hours every day collecting water from the closest water supply which is often miles away. Many families are forced to use the nearby river for water, which is known to be contaminated.

In the last few years, through partnering with Compassion and the local church, we have been able to set up water points in projects in which we are involved. These water points are life saving for the Compassion children and their wider community, reducing waterborne diseases significantly.
